Screenwriting
Gina writes fun, family-friendly features --
and "prestige" thrillers that are definitely R-rated.
ACCOLADES

Besides an Emmy Award, Gina's scripts won or placed highly in the Nicholl Fellowships, PAGE Awards, Austin Film Festival, CineStory, HUMANITAS fellowships, and Stowe Story Labs, among others. Her script portfolio at Coverfly (read more here) includes 5 feature projects in the top 5%.

(Some of her 60+ publications are visible above, on the shelf.)

THE KNOCKING AT THE MARSH

When her widowed mother vanishes during a blizzard in 1850s Virginia, a biracial teenager must defend herself, her vulnerable little sister, and their isolated farm against their slaveholding uncle and the torments of an angry spirit. Comps: THE WITCH; MAMÁ.

A Nicholl Semifinalist; CineStory Fellowship 2nd-place winner; PAGE finalist; WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Lab finalist; Stowe Story Labs Horror Fellowship Finalist; Sundance 2nd Rounder

THE LITANY OF THE SAINTS

When a devout, judgmental young nun suspects that her mother-superior's death was no accident, she must identify which of her sisters is the murderer—and why—before she becomes the next victim.

Black List review:

"It's refreshing to see a film that is mostly women, young and older, who all have agency and their own goals. It's incredibly feminist... They say everything has been done and then the reader comes across a script like this."

A Nicholl Fellowships QF.

MIA'S ACCIDENTALS

An awkward girl determined to lead an elite, all-American fife-and-drum corps is rejected by its powerful director, so she forms her own corps of misfits, and rights an old wrong when she leads them to the Nationals for a public showdown.

A Story Incubator participant; PAGE finalist; HUMANITAS fellowship finalist; and winner, Best Family Screenplay, Richmond International Film Festival.

MUSCLE AND BARK

An aging Alaska mail carrier takes a newspaper editor's $10,000 bet to deliver a letter to the White House by dogsled, unaware he was never supposed to arrive.

Based on true events.

Black List review:

"Dialogue is sharp and snappy with an equal measure of heartwarming engagements and comedic rapport. Tension and suspense ebb and flow throughout the story, which finishes in a happy and thoroughly satisfying way."

A PAGE Awards winner; AFF semifinalist; Nicholl Fellowships Top 15%; Table Read My Screenplay Top 100; Official Selection, Richmond Int'l Film Festival and Alaska Int'l Film Awards.

IF THESE WALLS COULD SHUT UP

When a reluctant inheritor decides to sell a tourist-trap re-enactment village, the site’s ghosts mount a dangerous campaign of resistance, unless she can solve a 200-year-old mystery in one night.

Inspired by my last assignment at my previous job. Heh.

Black List review:

"Philippa is a strong lead character that many up-and-coming actors would love to play. A strong supporting cast would also attract great talent. The story is fun and spooky, without being too scary for younger viewers."

THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

A white Civil War sharpshooter who deserts his comrades and the Union cause mysteriously time-travels to the present, where he meets a war-orphaned biracial boy who shows him a future worth fighting for.

PAGE Quarterfinalist; Nicholl Fellowships Top 15%; Roadmap Top Tier, top 50; AFF Second Round.

SHORTS

Gina's short scripts run the gamut from drama to comedy, from action-adventure to psychological horror. Her short films tend toward Twilight-Zone-like horror with a strongly feminist slant.

Accustomed to working on assignment, she finds inspiration in available locations, actors, and even props. (Read more here.)

DOORS, a spooky feminist thriller adapted from the Pamela Painter short story, was a Film Pipeline Script finalist and will premiere in 2025.

ASK FOR HELP was a Roy W. Dean Spring Grant finalist, an official selection in eleven film festivals including Final Girls Berlin (2024), and won BEST HORROR at the Southern Shorts Awards.
